CMS Tracker Upgrade for HL-LHC: R&D Plans, Present Status and Perspectives
نویسنده
چکیده
During the high luminosity phase of the LHC (HL-LHC), the machine is expected to deliver an instantaneous luminosity of 5× 10 cm−2s−1. A total of 3000 fb−1 of data is foreseen to be delivered, with the opening of new physics potential for the LHC experiments, but also new challenges from the point of view of both detector and electronics capabilities and radiation hardness. In order to maintain its physics reach, CMS will build a new Tracker, comprising completely new pixel detector and outer tracker. The ongoing R&D activities on both pixel and strip sensors will be presented. The present status of the Inner and Outer Tracker projects will be illustrated, and the possible perspectives will be discussed. Silicon strip detectors for ATLAS at the HL-LHC upgrade
The present ATLAS silicon strip tracker (SCT) and transition radiation tracker (TRT) are to be replaced with new silicon strip detectors as part of the inner tracker system (ITK) for the Phase-II upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider, HL-LHC. We have carried out intensive R&D programs based on n-on-p microstrip detectors to fabricate improved radiation hard strip detectors that can survive the r...
متن کاملThe ATLAS and CMS Plans for the LHC Luminosity Upgrade
In January 2007 the CERN director general announced the plan for the staged upgrade of the LHC luminosity. The plan foresees a phase 1 upgrade reaching a peak luminosity of 3 × 10 cms followed by phase reaching up to 10 cms. We discuss the physics potential and the experimental challenges of an upgraded LHC running. The detector R&D needed to operate ATLAS and CMS in a very high radiation envir...
متن کاملDesign process of the CMS Silicon Tracker for Super-LHC
Following an expected increase of the LHC luminosity beyond its design value of 1034 cm−2s−1 the CMS collaboration is planning for a series of upgrades on the experimental apparatus. In particular the silicon tracker should undergo two major upgrades to cope with the increased luminosity of the collider. The first intervention (Phase I) concerns a replacement of the pixel system, the rest of th...
متن کاملEnabling Technologies for Silicon Microstrip Tracking Detectors at the HL-LHC The PETTL Collaboration
While the tracking detectors of the ATLAS and CMS experiments have shown excellent performance in Run 1 of LHC data taking, and are expected to continue to do so during LHC operation at design luminosity, both experiments will have to exchange their tracking systems when the LHC is upgraded to the high-luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) around the year 2024. The new tracking systems need to operate in an ...
متن کاملATLAS Upgrade for the Super LHC Meeting the challenges of a ten-fold increase in collisions
With the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) about to start collisions, plans are already advancing for an upgrade. In this super-LHC (sLHC) project, about ten times the LHC luminosity in some 8 years from now is aimed. Coping with the high instantaneous and integrated luminosity will require many changes to the ATLAS detector. The designs are developing rapidly for an all-new inner-tracker, big change...
